KNF Unveils Provisional Squad for Africa World Youth Cup Qualifiers

Posted on

The Kenya Netball Federation has unveiled a preliminary squad of 30 players in anticipation of the upcoming Africa World Youth Cup qualifiers set to take place in Pretoria, South Africa, from March 14 to 24.

Following rigorous national U-21 trials held at the Ulinzi Sports Complex in Nairobi, the squad will eventually be trimmed down to 12 members.

Despite the promising talent showcased during the trials, head coach Mary Walubengo expressed concerns over the limited time available for adequate preparation ahead of the South African tournament.

“The potential we’ve seen from the secondary schools and colleges is immense. However, I wish we had more time for preparation. While we have exceptional players, they require extensive coaching,” remarked Walubengo.

Chairperson of KNF, Immaculate Kabutha, stressed the importance of nurturing young talent for future accomplishments, highlighting the opportunity for success if Kenya secures victory in March. Kabutha indicated that winning the qualifiers would earn the team a spot in the global event in Gibraltar scheduled for August.

The federation remains steadfast in its commitment to fostering young talent in collaboration with the government.

The trials, which attracted representation from 11 counties, featured 20 teams comprising players from secondary schools and colleges.

Kabutha, alongside Walubengo and national team captain Parin Simiyu, with assistance from George Adoyo, formed the panel of selectors tasked with evaluating the participants.

Notable players named in the provisional squad include Doreen Akinyi from Ulinzi Swords and Miriam Nekesa representing Kenya Prisons.
