Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) dethroned Equity Hawks to win the 2021-2022 Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) women’s Premier League champions.
The Dockers swept the Bankers 70-64 in a tight play-off Game Four played at Makande Gymnasium, in Mombasa to win 3-1 in the best-of-five series finals.
The Mombasa based ladies sailed away to a 22-10 first-quarter lead but the Bankers retaliated with the fire of their own, taking the second 19-15.
After the break, the Dockers took the initiative taking a slim 16-13 advantage. However, the Bankers replied to lead 20-17 in the deciding stanza.KPA build a 17-point lead at one time but never says die Equity Bank remained unbowed. Both sides had two lead changes and also tied twice.
Kenya Lioness experienced players including former captain Hilda Indasi, Velma Achieng, Medina Okot, Natalie Akinyi and Selina Okumu backed up the home team displaying a strong squad performance.
It’s the Dockers 15th National title and the first since 2017. They bagged a first in 1992, four years after the start of the women league. They have now ended their five-year drought by winning the title this year.
The Dockers stacked the final nail on the coffin as they buried the bankers’ hope of redemption to not only win the series 3-1, but also end the banker’s reign as champions.
In Nairobi, Eldonets won the women’s Division One title, pipping Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) Lynx 41-39.
