Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) basketball teams have solidified their status as powerhouses in Kenyan and regional basketball, particularly in the women’s category.

Both the men’s and women’s teams have displayed dominance in the Kenyan Premier League over the past six years, extending their control into the 2023 season.

KPA’s women’s team, coached by Anthony Ojukwu, has not only excelled locally but has also made a mark on the international stage, participating in continental championships like the Africa Women Basketball League and FIBA Zone Five.

In 2023, the women’s team achieved significant milestones, starting with the defense of the Premier League title in June against Zetech Sparks. They continued their success by triumphing over Rwanda Energy Group (REG) in the final of the Africa Women Basketball League (AWBL) Zone Five qualifiers in Kigali, Rwanda.

The team further made history in Alexandria, Egypt, securing a silver medal in the inaugural Africa Women Basketball League, marking their first podium finish at the continental level.

On the men’s side, KPA has clinched the league title five times in the last six seasons, displaying consistent excellence. According to Brenda Angeshi, the assistant coach for the women’s team, the success is attributed to hard work, teamwork, and the dedication of players spread across different cities in Kenya.

The commitment of players to individual training and the support of a disciplined technical team have contributed to their achievements. The motivation of international participation upon qualification and the backing from management in terms of funding are recognized as key drivers for the team’s success.

Sammy Kiki, the head coach of the men’s team, emphasizes the importance of hard work, dedication, desire, and commitment in training. He also highlights the significant support received from the management.

City Thunder assistant head coach Sadat Gaya attributes KPA’s success to a strong technical bench, led by retired Team Manager Ogutu, Coach Ojukwu, Mike Opel, and Sammy Kiki. The inclusion of veterans in the team and financial strength further contribute to KPA’s consistent achievements each season.
