Kenya Ports Authority showcased its experience and depth, overcoming an early challenge from newcomers Zetech University to secure a commanding 68-38 victory at the Nyayo Gymnasium in a highly anticipated Game One of the National Women’s Basketball Premier League playoffs on Saturday night.
Zetech University proved to be a formidable opponent in the opening quarter, keeping pace with the defending champions.
The scores were level at 11-11 with 5:47 remaining, as Zetech mounted a resurgence led by Mary Lisa’s well-executed three-pointer.
However, KPA quickly regained their footing in the second half of the game, going on a 6-0 scoring run to establish their dominance. Zetech changed their lineup, and Ashley Minayo made valuable contributions under the basket. They closed the gap to two points, with the scores at 20-18.
With 3:29 on the clock, KPA called for a timeout to halt Zetech’s momentum. The university team had a chance to take the lead on a fast break with 1:50 remaining, but a missed opportunity proved costly as KPA capitalized on the other end.
Linda Alando grabbed the rebound and nailed a three-pointer, extending their lead. Moments later, she added another basket. In the final minute, Belinda converted two free throws, giving KPA a 10-point advantage. However, Zetech narrowed the gap to six, with the halftime score at 30-24.
In the subsequent quarters, KPA showcased their unstoppable form. Their tight man-to-man defence, particularly Hilda Indasi’s excellent marking of Mary Lisa, proved effective. By forcing Lisa to rely on her weaker left hand and closely guarding Chantal Kiyobe, Zetech’s key players were neutralized.
KPA entered the third quarter with a significant lead of 53-27. Their fast breaks overwhelmed Zetech, making it challenging for the university team to keep up. By the end of the game, KPA had secured a convincing 30-point victory, setting the stage for Game Two.
Nigerian import Ifunaya Okoro stood out for KPA with a game-high 20 points, while Belinda Aluoch also contributed with 11 points. Zetech’s Mary Lisa, who had played a crucial role in the previous semifinal sweep against Equity Hawks, was contained and managed to score only seven points for her team.
KPA’s dominant performance in Game One positions them as the favourites heading into Game Two. Zetech will need to regroup and devise strategies to counter KPA’s relentless attack if they aim to turn the tide in their favour.
