The Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) has announced plans to reward the top performers from the recently concluded 2023 Berlin Marathon with an enticing three-day holiday in Kenya’s coastal tourism circuit. This gesture aims to recognize and celebrate their outstanding athletic achievements.
John Chirchir, the Acting Chief Executive Officer of KTB, extended his congratulations to the Kenyan marathoners who excelled at the Berlin Marathon in Germany.
Eliud Kipchoge secured his fifth victory in the event with a remarkable time of 2:02:42, while Vincent Kipkemoi claimed second place in 2:03:24. In the women’s race, Sheila Chepkirui represented Kenya with a strong second-place finish, clocking 2:17:49.
Chirchir emphasized the global prominence of marathons and athletics, highlighting how these sports have positively showcased Kenya to the world. He noted that this exposure has piqued the interest of international travellers, enticing them to explore the country.
“As the country’s tourism marketing agency, we continue to leverage sports to create awareness about our tourism destination and what other attractions to show to the world apart from the success of our cherished sportsmen and sportswomen,” said Chirchir.
Chirchir also revealed that fully paid holiday packages will be extended to other podium finishers in both the men’s and women’s categories in the upcoming Chicago and New York Marathons.
He emphasized the role of sports as a platform to promote Kenya’s unique offerings and pointed out that the Abbott Marathon Majors provide an ideal opportunity to showcase the country’s destination brand to a global audience of sports enthusiasts.
“The Abbott Majors host top-notch marathoners from across the globe, and our Kenyan marathoners have done us proud as invaluable Kenyan ambassadors. After touring the world, we would like them to sample and experience some of our signature experiences, may it be in safari, beach, adventure, and diverse culture,” Chirchir stated.
The Abbott Marathon Majors consist of six prestigious marathons hosted in major cities worldwide, including Chicago, Berlin, New York, London, Tokyo, and Boston.
These events have significantly contributed to Kenya’s reputation as the home of marathon champions, thanks to the numerous medals won by Kenyan athletes.
