Lakers coach Austin Tutu has declared his team as genuine contenders for the Kenya Hockey Union women’s Premier League title after collecting four points from their first two matches.
The team secured a 1-1 draw against national champions Strathmore University Scorpions before thrashing Kenyatta University Titans 6-1 on Sunday.
Aurelia Atieno and Alice Aoko both scored two goals each, while Debra Achieng and Ruth Netia contributed one goal each to secure the victory. Monica Kitui scored a consolation goal for the Titans.
Tutu believes that his team has what it takes to win the title this season and hopes to perform well in the upcoming clubs championship in Blantyre, Malawi.
He emphasized the importance of performing well in the domestic league to qualify for the event. “We have played second fiddle to Blazers and Strathmore for a while now and I believe it’s our time now,” said Tutu.
The Lakers are currently joint second in the standings with Amira Sailors, both on four points from two matches. However, the visitors have a superior goal difference.
Strathmore currently leads the standings with eight points from five matches, while former champions Blazers are fourth with three points from one match.
