Renowned French middle-distance runner Michel Jazy passed away at 87, as confirmed by the French athletics federation.

Jazy, a two-time European champion and Olympic silver medalist in the 1,500 meters, held nine world records in middle-distance events throughout his illustrious career.

Born in 1936 into a family of Polish miners, Jazy became a French citizen at 18 and participated in his first Olympic Games two years later. Despite not winning an Olympic gold, he achieved significant success, securing victories in various competitions.

The president of the French athletics federation expressed deep sorrow over the loss, highlighting Jazy’s immense contributions to the sport.

“I’m devastated,” FFA president Andre Giraud told AFP. “For the world of athletics and the FFA, it’s a huge loss given everything he represented, especially in this year of the Olympic Games in Paris.”
