Lewis Hamilton has provided insights into his contract negotiations with Mercedes and acknowledged having “casual conversations” with Ferrari about a potential move.
However, the seven-time Formula 1 World Champion ultimately opted to extend his contract with Mercedes for multiple years.
The future of Hamilton’s Formula 1 career had been under speculation in 2023 due to delays in contract negotiations with Mercedes. During this period of uncertainty, rumours circulated about Hamilton possibly joining Ferrari.
Nonetheless, those speculations were put to rest when Mercedes and Hamilton officially announced their continued partnership during the Italian Grand Prix.
In response to inquiries about a potential move to Ferrari, Hamilton clarified, “Never. Well, I’m sure we’ve had a few informal conversations. I know many great people there. But I never truly considered relocating to Italy.”
Mercedes’ team principal, Toto Wolff, shed light on the intricacies of the contract negotiations. Hamilton and Wolff have a history of engaging in comprehensive discussions regarding contract clauses. Hamilton explained, “This isn’t the first time both of us have spent hours discussing and negotiating over details.”
He continued, “Always with the understanding that, from Thursday to Sunday, I am exclusively committed to Formula 1. There are numerous aspects concerning my promotional commitments. I’m fortunate to have Toto by my side. He garners respect and admiration from everyone. Negotiating with him is straightforward, and that’s what makes him an exceptional leader.”
When asked whether he personally reviews the contract details, Hamilton admitted, “Certainly, I want to have a precise understanding of its contents. However, it has now grown to over 200 pages, or rather, it’s become a substantial volume. That would take days!”
With contract negotiations successfully concluded, Hamilton is set to continue his journey in Formula 1 with Mercedes. The upcoming event on the Formula 1 calendar is the Qatar Grand Prix, scheduled for the weekend of October 6-8.
This race, the 17th of the season, will take place at the Losail International Circuit, a permanent venue situated just outside Lusail, north of Doha.
Formula 1 enthusiasts can eagerly anticipate Hamilton’s performance as he strives to secure additional victories and further enhance his illustrious track record in the sport.
