The national women’s rugby 7s team commenced their journey toward the Paris Olympics with a resounding 27-0 victory against Zambia as the Rugby Africa Women’s 7s tournament began in Tunis, Tunisia on Saturday morning.
From the outset, the Lionesses displayed their hunger for success, with Janet Okello scoring the opening try. Stellah Wafula added another try, providing a solid 10-0 lead.
Zambia found themselves struggling to keep pace, and just before halftime, Wafula delivered another try, extending Kenya’s lead to a commanding 15-0 as they headed into the break.
The momentum continued into the second half, with Diana Awino scoring Kenya’s fourth try. Grace Okulu successfully converted, widening the lead to 22-0 in favour of the Kenyan squad.
Okello wasn’t finished, completing her brace with another try in the final moments of the game. This win underlines Kenya’s determination to secure a second consecutive appearance at the quadrennial Games, following their participation in the Tokyo Games in 2021.
Meanwhile, Kenya’s national women’s 15s side faced Spain in their opening match at the World Rugby WXV3 tournament in Dubai on Saturday afternoon.
