The Kenyan national women’s rugby sevens team, known as the Lionesses, is poised for success at the upcoming HSBC Challenger Series finale in Krakow, Poland.

With aspirations of securing a spot in the final round of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series qualifiers, the team’s spirits are high, and they are determined to secure a top-four finish.

Dennis Mwanja, the head coach, has expressed confidence in his team’s readiness, citing their rigorous preparations and strategic focus on the competition. “The team is in high spirits, and we’ve shifted our focus to the tactical aspects of our opponents, analyzing their gameplay to devise our strategies,” Mwanja stated.

He emphasized the importance of a strong psychological state and a clear understanding of the stakes involved, which include not only qualifying but also securing a position that would advance them to the playoff rounds.

While acknowledging the pressure of the competition, Mwanja has emphasized a measured approach, focusing on one game at a time to maintain the team’s composure. Currently ranked fifth in the Women’s Challenger Series standings, the Lionesses are not letting the pressure deter them. “We aim to rely on our intensive training and mental preparation to navigate the tournament. Our gameplay will adapt to the situations we encounter, capitalizing on opportunities that arise,” he explained.

To continue their pursuit of elite sevens rugby, the Lionesses must achieve a top-four finish. They find themselves in Pool C, alongside Belgium, Mexico, and the host nation, Poland.

The Lionesses’ campaign will kick off against Poland, followed by a face-off with Belgium, and conclude their group stage with a match against Mexico. The team’s strategy and resilience will be put to the test as they vie for a coveted spot in the top tier of rugby sevens.
