Liverpool kept their hopes of Champions League football alive with a 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest, after two goals from Diogo Jota on Saturday.
Aston Villa’s push for a European spot stalled as they drew 1-1 with Brentford. Meanwhile, Leicester secured their first win in 11 games by coming from behind to beat Wolves 2-1 and move out of the relegation zone.
Liverpool had thrashed Leeds 6-1 on Monday, but they struggled against Forest, who had only scored five away goals all season. Jota, who had not scored in a year before Monday, now has four goals in a week.
All of Liverpool’s goals came from set-pieces as they exposed Forest’s poor defending. Jota put Liverpool ahead twice in the second half, but Forest responded through Neco Williams and Morgan Gibbs-White.
However, Liverpool scored the winner 20 minutes from time when Mohamed Salah swept home Trent Alexander-Arnold’s free-kick.
Liverpool’s win takes them up to seventh and within six points of fourth-placed Newcastle, who host Tottenham on Sunday. Forest, on the other hand, slip to second-bottom, one point from safety.
In the other game, Villa came from behind to draw 1-1 with Brentford. Ivan Toney scored his 20th goal of the season for Brentford, but Douglas Luiz equalized three minutes from time to keep Villa in sixth.
Leicester’s win over Wolves was a turning point in their season, especially as they were without James Maddison due to injury.
Wolves took the lead through Matheus Cunha, but Kelechi Iheanacho’s penalty and Timothy Castagne’s goal secured a crucial three points for the Foxes.
The win pulled Everton into the relegation zone on goal difference despite their 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace, where Mason Holgate was sent off.
Leeds are now just one point outside the relegation zone after they were beaten 2-1 by Fulham, with goalkeeper Illan Meslier at fault for both goals.
