Kenya’s Malkia Strikers exited the FIVB Challenger Cup in Manila after a straight-set defeat to Puerto Rico in the quarterfinals.
The Strikers put up a strong fight in the third set but ultimately succumbed 27-25, after losses of 25-20 and 25-19 in the first two sets.
Pamella Odhiambo, making her international debut, shone with 22 points, 21 from attacks. Contributions also came from Belinda Barasa with nine points and Veronica Adhiambo with eight, while MVP Juliana Namutira added five. Star player Sharon Chepchumba had a subdued performance, scoring only two points.
Service errors were a concern for coach Japheth Munala, with seven points conceded and reception errors needing attention.
The Strikers matched Puerto Rico initially but fell behind as the sets progressed. The third set saw a spirited comeback, leading 18-16, but Puerto Rico regained control. Odhiambo’s powerful attacks brought the game to a tie at 25-25, but Puerto Rico’s Grace Lopez secured the win with decisive strikes.
Despite the loss, Munala is optimistic, focusing on the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris. The team will engage in friendly matches in the Philippines before returning home and heading to Miramas, France, for an Olympic preparation camp.
