Mason Greenwood, the on-loan Manchester United forward, participated in his first training session with his new teammates at Spanish La Liga club Getafe on Tuesday.
The training session was observed by several thousand enthusiastic supporters. Getafe secured the services of the 21-year-old Greenwood on Friday until the end of the season, despite the player having faced allegations of abuse involving a young woman.
In a video message shared on X, the social media platform previously known as Twitter, Greenwood expressed his excitement, saying, “Hi Getafe fans, it’s Mason here. I’m so happy to be here and I can’t wait to get started.”
Greenwood had been under suspension by Premier League club Manchester United since January 2022 due to the allegations. However, prosecutors dropped charges, including attempted rape and sexual assault, in February.
Last week, Manchester United announced their decision to allow Greenwood to rebuild his career away from Old Trafford. Just before the transfer window closed, Greenwood was granted permission to join Getafe, a club in the Madrid suburbs, for the remainder of the season.
Getafe’s coach, Jose Bordalas, has pledged the club’s support in helping Greenwood regain his best form.
“It is too delicate a situation to trivialize this issue,” Bordalas stated following Getafe’s 2-1 defeat at the hands of Real Madrid on Saturday.
“Everybody knows what happened, the appropriate measures were taken,” Bordalas continued.
“Obviously we can only talk about football. About other issues, I think, the people and the relevant systems did what they had to do, and everybody knows how it ended.
“Therefore, (he’s) a free person, a footballer of the highest level, who comes to Getafe with enormous hope. We are going to help him to recover his best level.”
