Mathare United’s quest for promotion to the Football Kenya Federation-Premier League (FKF-PL) received a significant boost after a comeback victory over Vihiga Bullets.

The 2-1 win in the National Super League (NSL) match at Dandora Stadium has placed them just one point behind league leaders Mara Sugar, with only three games remaining.

Mara Sugar, vying for their inaugural NSL championship and a spot in top-tier football, lead the standings with 72 points. They aim to extend their lead in an upcoming match against Nairobi United. Meanwhile, Vihiga Bullets, who are fighting to stay clear of relegation, initially took the lead with an early goal from John Nyawir.

Mathare United, undeterred by the early setback, equalized through a penalty by Paul Were and later secured the win with a goal from Meshack Ochieno. Collins Omondi, Mathare’s head coach, hailed the victory as pivotal for their promotion hopes, emphasizing a strategic approach to future matches.

Vihiga Bullets’ coach Andrew Ongwae remained optimistic about his team’s chances of avoiding relegation, despite the loss, and is focused on preparing for the next season.

The NSL’s top two teams will be directly promoted to the FKF-PL, while the third-placed team will have a chance to ascend via a playoff against the 16th-placed team in the premier league. Mathare United’s recent triumph has solidified their position as strong contenders for one of the coveted automatic promotion spots
