Kenya’s football ambitions have a new leader, as South African legend Benni McCarthy officially takes the helm as head coach of the Harambee Stars, pledging to transform the team into a dominant force in African football.

Unveiled in Nairobi alongside his coaching staff, McCarthy signed a two-year contract running until 2027—a period that includes Kenya’s co-hosting of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). His arrival signals a new era, one he believes will propel the Stars to new heights.

“It’s an absolute privilege to be here in Kenya. I can’t wait to get started on this journey of making Kenya one of the powerhouses of African football,” said McCarthy, brimming with confidence.

The 47-year-old’s impressive career—both as a player and a coach—backs up his ambition. As a player, he conquered Europe with FC Porto, winning the UEFA Champions League under José Mourinho. His coaching journey has taken him from Sint-Truiden to Manchester United, where he shaped attacking talent at one of the world’s biggest clubs. Now, he brings that expertise to Kenya.

“With all the experience I’ve gained, I want to take Kenya to the next level,” he declared. “The talent is here. We just need the right structure, belief, and hard work to make it happen.”

McCarthy’s appointment was a strategic move by the Football Kenya Federation (FKF), with President Hussein Mohammed hailing his competitive fire and winning mentality.

“He has the hunger, the experience, and understands African football,” said Hussein. “With the right support, he can take Kenya all the way.”

Joining him in the technical team are Vasili Manousakis (Assistant Coach), Moeneeb Josephs (Goalkeepers Coach), and Pilela Maposa (Performance Analyst). Their immediate task? Preparing the team for the crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Gabon on March 24 at Nyayo Stadium—Kenya’s first home match since 2022.

Kenya will also co-host the Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) in August, offering McCarthy another stage to showcase his vision for the Stars.

McCarthy is not just here to participate, he wants to win. While Kenya’s World Cup qualification hopes took an early hit, he remains optimistic.

“We want to fight for every point and push for a top finish,” he asserted. “Why not Kenya? Other nations have risen, and we have the potential to do the same.”

Beyond results, he is committed to building a football culture rooted in professionalism, discipline, and tactical excellence. He has already expressed interest in working closely with Harambee Starlets coach Beldine Odemba, reinforcing his belief in a holistic approach to Kenyan football.

With his winning pedigree, tactical acumen, and unshakable belief, McCarthy has ignited hope among Kenyan football fans. If his promise holds, the Harambee Stars could soon stand tall among Africa’s elite.

The road ahead is tough, but for McCarthy, the goal is clear—turning Kenya into a football powerhouse.
