Renowned golfer Rory McIlroy has signaled his willingness to participate in a tournament affiliated with LIV Golf, the controversial tour, under certain conditions.
McIlroy, a vocal critic of LIV Golf’s impact on the sport, shared that he would be open to involvement if the tour were to adopt a format akin to cricket’s Indian Premier League (IPL).
The golfer envisions LIV Golf evolving into the IPL of golf, featuring a condensed calendar spanning two months and incorporating team-based competitions, offering a fresh and distinct approach to the sport. McIlroy, currently ranked second globally, sees potential in creating a more engaging and innovative golfing experience.
Ongoing talks about a potential merger between the PGA Tour and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, the financial backer of LIV Golf, are slated to continue in 2024.
