Johnathan McKinstry, the esteemed head coach of Gor Mahia, is slated to return to the team’s camp on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, to oversee the final matches of the FKF Premier League season.
McKinstry had temporarily departed to manage the Gambian National Football Team, leading them to a resounding 5-1 victory over Seychelles in the World Cup qualifiers.
Ambrose Rachier, the chairman of Gor Mahia, has confirmed that McKinstry’s tenure with the club will conclude after the season’s last match against Bidco United in Machakos on June 23, 2024. McKinstry is tasked with leading the team in its last three matches before the two parties amicably part ways.
In the interim, McKinstry will also guide Gambia in a crucial qualifier against Gabon. Upon his return to Kenya, he will take charge of Gor Mahia’s matches against Sofapaka, Talanta, and Bidco United, as the club seeks to add to its impressive record of 21 FKF Premier League titles.
The club has expressed its intention to appoint a new head coach following McKinstry’s official release. Rachier praised McKinstry for his contributions to Gor Mahia and his recent international success with Gambia.
McKinstry’s association with Gor Mahia began in July 2022, and he has since led the team to back-to-back league titles. His departure will mark the end of a successful chapter for the club, which has already secured its latest title with matches to spare.
As Gor Mahia prepares for future campaigns, including the CAF Champions League, the focus now shifts to the announcement of McKinstry’s successor, a decision that will be made at an appropriate time to ensure a smooth transition.
McKinstry, who has previously coached national teams including Uganda, Rwanda, and Seychelles, has expressed his fondness for Gor Mahia and his intention to continue supporting the team in their continental endeavors.
The club’s international presence is also highlighted by four of its players representing national teams, with Rooney Onyango, Benson Omalla, and Austin Odhiambo playing for Harambee Stars, and Patrick Sibomana featuring for Rwanda.
