McQueen: Scotland, Man United and Leeds Great dies aged 70
Gordon McQueen, the esteemed former Scottish footballer who made his mark at Leeds United, Manchester United, and on the international stage, has sadly passed away at the age of 70 after a battle with dementia.
Beginning his career with St Mirren, McQueen was soon transferred to Leeds United, where he played a pivotal role in securing the English league title in 1974.
His prowess on the field continued as he later contributed to Manchester United’s triumph in the FA Cup of 1983.
Representing Scotland on 30 occasions, McQueen was set to participate in the 1978 World Cup. However, an injury prevented him from taking part. Following his retirement from professional football, McQueen became a respected pundit, sharing his insights with fans around the globe. In 2011, he courageously fought and overcame laryngeal cancer.
In 2021, McQueen received a diagnosis of dementia, which prompted his family to raise awareness about the potential risks associated with the frequent heading of the ball in football. They hoped that his story would resonate with today’s generation of footballers.
A statement released by his family expressed their profound grief: “It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gordon. He peacefully left us at home this morning, leaving behind his wife Yvonne, daughters Hayley and Anna, son Eddie, and his beloved grandchildren Rudi, Etta, and Ayla.”
While his football achievements are indelible, his family emphasized that McQueen’s character should be equally cherished. They recalled the vibrant atmosphere that pervaded their home, with football serving as a centrepiece.
Even during his challenging battle with dementia, McQueen remained an entertainer, the life and soul of every occasion, and an incredibly fun-loving father.
The family extended their gratitude to the exceptional staff at Herriot Hospice Homecare for their outstanding care, the remarkable team from Marie Curie who provided unwavering support during Gordon’s final moments, and the Head for Change for their emotional guidance and respite care. They also expressed deep appreciation for the unwavering support received from friends and family during the most difficult times.
Gordon McQueen’s legacy will forever be etched in the hearts of football fans worldwide. He may have departed too soon due to the ravages of dementia, but his spirit of living life to the fullest remains an enduring inspiration.
Rest in peace, Gordon McQueen. Your contributions to the world of football will never be forgotten.
