The Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) Marines and Zetech Oaks showcased their prowess, earning coveted spots in the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) Championship in thrilling semifinal clashes held at Khamisi High School in Mombasa and JKUAT grounds in Nairobi.
TUM Marines engaged in a riveting battle against Sigalagala, who journeyed from Kakamega for the showdown. The Marines, now replacing relegated Kabarak University, surged ahead early with a try from Steve Migel, swiftly converted by veteran Elias Gitonga.
They extended their lead to 12-0 with Ezra Mumbo’s five-pointer. Despite Sigalagala’s resilience, the Marines maintained pressure, securing a 20-0 lead at halftime with another try from Ezra and penalties expertly executed by Gitonga.
Sigalagala staged a strong comeback in the second half, narrowing the gap to 20-10 with Sam Bachai’s try and penalty. While Sigalagala managed to land a converted try and two penalties, Gitonga’s precise kicking sealed the deal for TUM Marines, clinching a hard-fought 26-23 victory under the guidance of coach Brian Owino.
Meanwhile, Zetech Oaks faced off against Eldoret-based Project 61, emerging victorious with a commanding 23-9 win. Despite Project 61’s efforts, Zetech Oaks dominated from the outset, securing two well-executed tries and conversions. Mike Wekesa and Jack Mangale delivered standout performances, ensuring Zetech Oaks’ triumphant return to the KRU Championship, replacing Shamas Foundation.
With their victories secured, TUM Marines and Zetech Oaks will now vie for the championship title in what promises to be an electrifying final showdown.
