The current women’s world 200m champion Shericka Jackson dominated the women’s 200m event posting an impressive time of 21.86 at the Monaco Diamond League 2023 on Friday night, 21 July.
Julien Alfred, the recent collegiate champion from St. Lucia, took second place with a time of 22.08. Former world champion Dina Asher-Smith achieved a season’s best with a time of 22.23, claiming third place. Gabby Thomas, the recent American champion and Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist, struggled to maintain her pace and finished in seventh place with a time of 22.67.
All four athletes are set to compete in next month’s World Athletics Championships in Budapest. Jackson remains unbeaten in the 200m event this season, with her season-best time of 21.71 at the Jamaican national championships ranking second only to Thomas’ time of 21.61 at the U.S. nationals on the same day (9 July).
After her victory, Jackson expressed her delight, stating, “It was great for me today. Last time I was second here, so to come here and take the win, is really really good. I have three competitions in a week, so it is a bit hard for me. One more coming up, it will be London [Diamond League]. This season I focus on myself, and I just stay in my lane.”
She added, “I want to make sure I am on top of my shape in Budapest.”
