Mary Moraa, the Commonwealth Games 800m champion, has confirmed her participation in the Police Service track and field championship, where she will defend her national title in the 400m event on June 7.
In a recent interview, Moraa revealed her decision to skip the Florence and Paris Diamond League meetings in order to focus on the upcoming local competition.
She expressed her determination to excel in the one-lap race and aimed to break her own distance record.
Moraa achieved a significant milestone by setting a new national record of 50.43 seconds during the Botswana Golden Grand Prix in Gaborone. This performance secured her direct qualification for the World Athletics Championships, which requires a standard of 51.0 seconds.
Last year, Moraa initially set the national record in the 400m with a time of 50.84 at the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani. She further improved her personal best to 50.67 at the Brussels Diamond League later that year.
Moraa revealed that her participation in the Police Service championship was influenced by her employers’ request to enhance the event’s profile, especially in light of the absence of other renowned athletes competing in the Diamond League meets.
While Moraa had originally planned to run the 400m in Florence and the 800m in Paris, she will now focus on her upcoming races, including the Lausanne Diamond League on June 30. Her ultimate goal is to perform well in the 800m at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
The ambitious athlete maintains her dream of breaking the world record in the two-lap race, and she hopes to continue her impressive form displayed during previous competitions, including winning the Diamond League trophy and securing bronze at the Oregon 22 championships in the 800m race.
