Kenya’s national men’s basketball team, Morans, is set to compete in the fifth-place playoff at the 2023 FIBA Afrocan Championships in Luanda, Angola.
After a hard-fought match against Nigeria, where they emerged victorious with a score of 61-59, Morans secured their spot in the top five.
The trio of Griffins Ligare Wisyuba, Bramwel Mwombe Muchina, based in Tanzania, and Derrick Makenye Ogechi, based in the United States, showcased their skills and contributed a total of 35 points to lead Morans to victory. Their impressive performance has kept Kenya’s hopes alive for a strong finish in the tournament.
In the upcoming fifth-place playoff, Kenya will face the winner between Angola and Tunisia at the Pavilhão Multiusos de Luanda Arena.
On the other hand, Nigeria will compete in the seventh-place playoff against the losing side of the Angola-Tunisia match.
Meanwhile, in the semifinals, the defending champions, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), will take on Morocco, while Rwanda will face Cote d’Ivoire on Friday. Unfortunately, Morans’ chances of securing a podium position were dashed after a 55-46 defeat against Morocco in the previous match.
The FIBA AfroCan tournament mandates that participating countries must field teams comprising at least 50% of players from their domestic leagues, with a maximum of two foreign-based players allowed.
This championship, which commenced on Saturday, will culminate on Sunday. The teams continue to showcase their talents and compete fiercely, aiming to etch their names in the history of African basketball.
