Alvaro Morata shone as Atletico Madrid put an end to Real Madrid’s flawless start in the La Liga season with a convincing victory in the city’s renowned derby.

Atletico surged ahead within four minutes, with Morata, a former Real player, capitalizing on Samuel Lino’s menacing cross to slot in the opener.

Antoine Griezmann further extended Atletico’s lead to 2-0 with a well-placed header. However, Toni Kroos provided Real a glimmer of hope with a superb low strike that narrowed the gap.

Morata, though, ensured Atletico’s triumph when he leapt highest to meet Saul Niguez’s precise delivery after the halftime break.

This victory propelled Atletico to fifth place in the league standings, while Real dropped their first points of the season and currently holds the third spot, trailing behind leaders Barcelona and Girona.

Prior to this clash, Atletico had only secured a solitary victory in their last 14 La Liga Madrid derbies. Nonetheless, they left a significant mark by netting two early goals and displaying resolute defence thereafter.

England midfielder Jude Bellingham, who has enjoyed a remarkable spell since his summer transfer to Real Madrid, found himself frustrated throughout the game. His night ended on a sour note with a yellow card following a mistimed challenge on Angel Correa during injury time.

Bellingham had netted six goals in his initial six appearances across all competitions for Real, but this defeat marked his first loss as a player for the club.
