Kenya overcame an early setback to secure a thrilling four-wicket victory against Rwanda in the Four-Nation T20 Series on Wednesday at the Nairobi Sikh Union.

Reduced to 43 for 4 during the powerplay, Kenya’s hopes seemed dim until Neil Mugabe’s spectacular performance turned the game around, extending their unbeaten streak in the tournament.

Mugabe scored an impressive 71 off 46 balls, leading Kenya to a score of 172 for six in 17.4 overs, surpassing Rwanda’s total of 168 for one.

“Having four wickets down in less than six overs is concerning for any side. We were worried, but Mugabe demonstrated the qualities of a top-order batsman by weathering the storm and ensuring our survival,” said skipper Rakep Patel.

This victory marks Kenya’s fifth consecutive win in the tournament and their second triumph over Rwanda. Kenya is set to play against Malawi on Thursday, while Rwanda will face Zambia.

Rwanda batted first, losing only one wicket as Kenyan bowlers struggled on a flat surface. Oscar Manishimwe continued his stellar form, scoring a half-century for the sixth consecutive game, contributing to what appeared to be a comfortable total.

Openers Manishimwe (79) and Didier Ndikubwimana (50) established a tournament-record partnership of 114 in 13 overs, setting a strong foundation for Rwanda’s score. Shem Ngoche took the only wicket, dismissing Ndikubwimana, while Hamza Khan (29) provided Manishimwe with an unbeaten 54-run partnership in seven overs.

Rwanda’s bowlers struck early, with Rushab Patel and captain Rakep Patel falling in the first over. Sachin Bhudiya’s dismissal three overs later caused panic in Kenya’s camp, and a mix-up led to Sukdeep Singh being run out, leaving Kenya reeling at 43 for 4 during the powerplay.

However, Kenya recovered as Lucas Oluoch offered crucial support to Mugabe, contributing 50 runs in a six-over stand. Oluoch scored 32 off 22 balls before being caught in the deep. Jasraj Kundi then shone with the bat, scoring 31 from 17 balls, leaving Rwanda questioning their missed opportunity for a first-ever victory over the hosts.

Kenya’s impressive comeback secured their place at the top of the standings, setting the stage for their next match against Malawi. Rwanda, still seeking their first win against Kenya, will look to regroup as they prepare to face Zambia.
