Muranga Seal missed out on an opportunity to claim the top spot in the National Super League as they were held to a goalless draw by hosts Mara Sugar at Awendo Green Stadium on Sunday.

A victory would have propelled Muranga Seal ahead of Shabana to the summit of the league table. However, Shabana did not have a match this weekend and will host Kibera Black Stars on Saturday.

With the draw, Muranga Seal remains in second place with 55 points, trailing league leaders Shabana by two points. Meanwhile, Mara Sugar maintains their fourth position with 44 points, falling short of closing the gap on the promotion favourites.

Muranga Seal’s coach, Vincent Nyaberi, expressed satisfaction with the result.

“We earned a crucial point away from home, and I’m content with it. Our intention was to secure a victory and claim the top spot, but things didn’t go as planned,” said Nyaberi. “We are firmly in the promotion race, and the point against Mara Sugar is significant.”

Nyaberi lamented missed opportunities and criticized the officiating during the game, which took place at Awendo Green Stadium in Migori County.

“The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) needs to address the issue of officiating. I am dissatisfied with today’s officiating,” Nyaberi added.

He emphasized that his team’s focus has now shifted to the next match against Mwatate FC.

“We aim to return to winning ways against Mwatate FC,” declared the former defender.

On the other side, Mara Sugar’s coach, Francis Xavier, acknowledged the challenging nature of the match, characterized by missed chances.

“My strikers were not clinical in front of goal. It was a tough encounter,” said Xavier.

He further stated, “The draw is not favorable for us as we strive to secure a playoff spot. However, all hope is not lost. We will continue working hard. With seven games remaining, we still have a chance to seal a playoff position.”
