Rafael Nadal marked his comeback with a triumphant return at the Barcelona Open, overcoming a series of injuries that had sidelined him since the beginning of the year.

The celebrated Spanish tennis icon, on the cusp of turning 38, showcased his enduring skill by defeating the young Italian talent Flavio Cobolli with a score of 6-2, 6-3 in the opening round on Tuesday.

Currently positioned at 644th in the world rankings, Nadal’s participation in the tournament was his first competitive appearance following a hiatus due to a hip injury and abdominal problems. With 2024 potentially being his swan song year, Nadal has hinted at hanging up his racket by season’s end, particularly after withdrawing from the previous year’s French Open owing to his hip issue.

Regarded as one of the all-time greats and the undisputed master of clay courts, Nadal has had limited playtime, participating in only one event since his injury. However, ahead of his latest return in Barcelona, he expressed a reluctance to set a firm date for retirement, stating his intention to continue competing as long as he finds it fulfilling.

Nadal’s recent victory in Barcelona is a promising sign as he sets his sights on reclaiming glory at Roland Garros next month.

Facing the challenge of Australian world number 11 Alex de Minaur in the upcoming match, Nadal remains optimistic. “I’m just having fun and happy to start with a victory,” he shared. Despite acknowledging the difficult periods he’s endured, Nadal finds significant meaning in being able to tour and compete, even if only to a limited extent.
