Julian Nagelsmann, the former Bayern Munich boss, has been appointed as Germany’s national team coach, succeeding Hansi Flick, who was dismissed due to the team’s struggles.
Nagelsmann’s contract runs until the end of July 2024, coinciding with Euro 2024, which Germany will host. Flick’s dismissal was prompted by poor performances, including a disappointing exit from the 2022 World Cup group stage in Qatar.
Nagelsmann expressed his eagerness to tackle the challenge, keeping his focus on Euro 2024 but not ruling out an extension. DFB president Bernd Neuendorf praised Nagelsmann as “an outstanding coach.”
Rudi Voeller, DFB sporting director, lauded Nagelsmann as “an absolute football expert.” Thomas Tuchel, the current Bayern manager, congratulated Nagelsmann and predicted a successful Euro 2024 for Germany under his leadership.
Nagelsmann emphasized the importance of an easily implementable playing style. He also discussed his “painful” exit from Bayern Munich and expressed excitement about working with the national team.
Barcelona’s Ilkay Gundogan will continue as captain. Germany’s next assignment includes friendlies against the USA and Mexico in October during their tour to the United States.
