Namibia’s football team, the Brave Warriors, delivered a stunning upset in the Africa Cup of Nations, securing a 1-0 victory over former champions Tunisia on Tuesday in Korhogo.
Deon Hotto, representing South African club Orlando Pirates, scored a decisive goal in the 88th minute, heading in a precise cross from Bethuel Muzeu. This marked Namibia’s first-ever win in the competition after enduring two draws and seven losses since their debut in 1998.
While Tunisia maintained possession, Namibia showcased resilience with more goal attempts and shots on target. Tunisia’s captain, Youssef Msakni, had hoped for a memorable night as he equaled the record for finals appearances, participating in the Cup of Nations for the eighth time.
The game saw early chances for both sides, with Namibia’s goalkeeper Lloyd Kazapua denying Tunisia’s Taha Yassine Khenissi’s header. Namibian captain Peter Shalulile, from South African club Mamelodi Sundowns, tested Tunisian goalkeeper Bechir Ben Said with a snap shot.
The scorching heat, with temperatures reaching 35 Celsius (95 Fahrenheit), prompted a water break midway through the first half. Namibia, initially focused on defense, gradually shifted to a more offensive strategy against the 2004 African champions.
The second half began dramatically, with Tunisia’s Msakni narrowly missing the chance to put his team ahead. His near-post header off a corner was brilliantly saved by Namibia’s Kazapua. Despite a late disallowed goal for Hotto due to offside, Namibia celebrated their historic victory.
In other remarks this week, Aliou Cisse, coach of 2022 Cup of Nations winners Senegal, emphasized the challenges of playing in such heat, urging the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to reconsider kick-off times, particularly for matches starting at 1400 local time.
The next match in Group E features Mali against South Africa, taking place in the northern Ivorian city of Korhogo.
