Naomi Osaka’s Wimbledon comeback after a five-year hiatus felt surreal to the tennis star. The four-time Grand Slam winner triumphed over Diane Parry with a score of 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 in the opening round.

Osaka, hailing from Japan, rejoined the tennis circuit in 2024 following the birth of her daughter Shai. Currently ranked 113th globally, Osaka had previously taken a break from the sport due to an injury in 2022 and mental health considerations in 2021.

Reflecting on her return, Osaka expressed her excitement, noting the personal significance of Wimbledon as the first tournament she watched post-pregnancy. With her daughter’s first birthday approaching, Osaka cherished the timing of her return.

Granted a wildcard entry, Osaka swiftly claimed the first set in 22 minutes, outplaying the young French contender, Parry. Despite a dip in performance during the second set, Osaka regained her composure in the final set. Parry’s three double faults ultimately sealed her fate, setting up Osaka’s next match against the 19th seed, American player Emma Navarro.

Osaka shared a poignant moment before her match, browsing through her photo album and reminiscing about the past year’s challenges. “It’s an incredible feeling to be here,” Osaka said. “Last year, I was focused on getting through each day. The experience of childbirth was overwhelming, and I’m still processing it.” The tennis champion’s resilience shines as she continues her journey at Wimbledon, inspired by her new role as a mother.
