Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James has been chosen as the male flagbearer for Team USA at the Olympic Games opening ceremony this Friday.

The 39-year-old was nominated by his fellow American Olympians, with the announcement of the female flagbearer set for Tuesday.

James, a two-time gold medalist, will be competing in his fourth Olympic Games in Paris.

“It’s an incredible honor to represent the United States on this global stage, especially in a moment that can bring the whole world together,” said James. “For a kid from Akron, this responsibility means everything to not only myself but to my family, all the kids in my hometown, my teammates, fellow Olympians, and so many people across the country with big aspirations.”

A four-time NBA champion and the league’s all-time leading points scorer, James won bronze in Athens in 2004 during his first Olympic Games. He secured his first gold medal in Beijing in 2008 and added another in London in 2012.

Friday night’s ceremony, set to take place on the River Seine, will mark the first time in summer Olympic history that the opening ceremony is held outside the main stadium.
