Newcastle exacted revenge on Manchester United for their League Cup final defeat with a 2-0 victory on Sunday, which propelled them to third place in the Premier League.

The Magpies now sit one point ahead of fifth-placed Tottenham and ahead of United on goal difference in the race for a top-four finish and a spot in next season’s Champions League.
Newcastle’s ambition to qualify for the Champions League is being fueled by Eddie Howe’s astute management and the financial backing of their Saudi owners.
Their victory over United marks a rare opportunity to finish above them for the first time in 46 years. “If you’re playing well, that’s the most important thing.

On the other hand, United’s hopes of securing a top-four finish took a hit with their third successive league game without a win.
They were thrashed 7-0 at Liverpool and held to a goalless draw by Southampton before their defeat by Newcastle.
Their first major trophy in six years has failed to usher in a new golden era, as they have now failed to score in three consecutive league games for the first time since February 2020.
Meanwhile, in Sunday’s other game, West Ham secured a crucial 1-0 victory against fellow strugglers Southampton, thanks to Nayef Aguerd’s first goal for the club.
The win lifted West Ham out of the relegation zone and up to 14th place in the Premier League. Southampton, however, remains bottom of the table, three points from safety, after their winless run reached four games.
