Nigeria delivered a stunning 3-2 win over co-hosts Australia, leaving the Matildas in danger of an early exit from the tournament in an exhilarating match at the Women’s World Cup.

The game, witnessed by an impressive crowd of 49,156 in Brisbane, saw Nigeria claim the top spot in Group B, while Australia now faces a must-win final group game against Olympic champions Canada to secure their spot in the last 16.

Osinachi Ohale and Asisat Oshoala emerged as the heroes for Nigeria, netting crucial second-half goals that turned the tide in their favour. Despite the Matildas taking the lead and dominating the first half, they struggled to break down Nigeria’s resilient defence. However, in the closing moments of the first half, Nigeria struck back, with Uchenna Kanu equalizing just before the whistle.

In the 65th minute, defender Ohale displayed her aerial prowess, heading home a rebounded shot to put Nigeria in the lead.

Barcelona’s Oshoala, who entered the game in the second half, capitalized on a defensive mix-up between Australia’s goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold and defender Alanna Kennedy, securing Nigeria’s third goal from an acute angle.

Despite Australia’s late goal by Kennedy in the 10th minute of stoppage time, Nigeria held on for a famous victory that places them at the top of their group. The win was particularly significant for Nigeria, considering they had previously held Canada to a goalless draw in their opening match.

Nigeria’s coach Randy Waldrum praised his team’s unity and competitive spirit, emphasizing that success is achieved through collective effort rather than individual talent. Meanwhile, Australia’s captain Steph Catley acknowledged her team’s missed opportunities and vowed to bounce back in their final group game against Canada.

For Nigeria, the victory signals their strong form and resilience, making them serious contenders for the knockout rounds. Coach Waldrum called for increased funding for teams like Nigeria to compete at the top level, emphasizing the potential for growth and success if adequate investment is made in women’s football in various countries.

As the African representatives, Nigeria’s impressive performance against top teams demonstrates the talent and determination within their squad. The Women’s World Cup continues to showcase the exhilarating and fiercely competitive nature of women’s football on the global stage.

The stage is set for more thrilling matches and unexpected results as the tournament progresses, with teams vying for the coveted title and showcasing the best of women’s football to the world.
