Nigerian Striker Victor Osimhen Crowned African Footballer of the Year

Nigeria’s football stars shone brightly at the African Footballer of the Year awards held in Marrakech. Victor Osimhen, the 24-year-old Napoli striker, claimed the prestigious African Footballer of the Year title after a remarkable season where he played a pivotal role in Napoli’s unexpected triumph in Serie A.

Osimhen, who netted an impressive 26 goals, surpassed strong contenders Mohamed Salah and Achraf Hakimi to become the first Nigerian winner since Nwankwo Kanu in 1999.

Expressing his gratitude, Osimhen said, “It is a dream come true. I have to thank everybody who has helped me on this journey and all Africans who have helped to put me on the map despite my faults.”

In the women’s category, Asisat Oshoala, the talented Barcelona forward, secured the African Footballer of the Year for a record sixth time.

Oshoala’s exceptional contribution, despite battling injuries, played a crucial role in guiding Nigeria to the round of 16 at the World Cup in Australia & New Zealand, where they took England to penalties.
