The 98th edition of the Annual Tannahill Shield Easter Golf Tournament has begun with nine clubs set to compete from April 4-8. Unlike other golf events, this amateur competition is played by teams, not individuals.
The tournament is the largest amateur golf event in Sub-Saharan Africa and will bring together the best amateur players from Nairobi, Mombasa, and the Western region.
Some of the clubs participating include hosts Royal Nairobi Golf, Windsor Golf Club, Mombasa Golf Club, and Muthaiga Golf Club.
The juniors’ competition began on Tuesday, and the other categories will begin on Friday and run through Saturday.
Captain Peter Mwangi of Royal Nairobi Golf Club said, “We have been in contact with all participating teams, and they are all excited and training hard so that they can win this coveted trophy.”
Last year, Vet Lab Sports Club won the junior title by three shots over Royal Nairobi Golf Club (RNGC), while Muthaiga Golf Club won the senior competition with 242 points, followed by RNGC with 255 points, and Kenya Railways Golf Club taking the 2nd runners-up spot with 260 points.
The Tannahill tournament is the brainchild of Major Arthur Tannahill and has been held annually since its inauguration in 1924.
