In a remarkable display of resilience and teamwork, Nondescripts Rugby Club clinched their second consecutive victory, defeating Kenya Harlequin and booking their spot in the Kenya Cup semi-finals.
Head coach Callum Oliver attributed the team’s success to their cohesive synergy and unwavering commitment on the field. Their hard-fought 26-20 win over Kenya Harlequins marked a significant milestone in their return to the top tier of Kenyan rugby.
Oliver commended his players for their dedication, highlighting the minimal departures from the team despite relegation to the championship last year. He emphasized their collective effort in rebuilding the club, which is now yielding positive results on the pitch.
Despite acknowledging Kenya Harlequin’s esteemed history and the leadership of Victor Sudi, Oliver expressed satisfaction in overcoming such a formidable opponent. Looking forward, he expressed a mix of relief and optimism for the challenges that lie ahead in the semi-finals.
On the flip side, Kenya Harlequin head coach Paul Murunga reflected on their season, finding consolation in their overall performance despite falling short in the quarter-final clash against Nondies.
Murunga praised his team’s resilience, especially after enduring a red card early in the match, which significantly impacted their playing strength.
He noted, “Despite conceding a last-minute try and ultimately losing to Nondies, our performance was hindered by a red card in the 25th minute, followed by a yellow card. This left us playing with just thirteen men, which undoubtedly impacted our game. Nevertheless, I’m satisfied with our overall season.”
“In my assessment, we’ve had a fairly good season, especially considering our qualification for the playoffs,” he added.
In another quarter-final showdown, Menengai Oilers displayed their dominance with a commanding 26-0 victory over Kenyatta University’s Blak Blad, securing their place in the semi-finals. They are set to face KCB RFC at the KCB Sports Club in Nairobi.
Nondies will now brace for a tough challenge against Kenya Cup defending champions Kabras Sugar in Kakamega this weekend. With Kabras being the only unbeaten side in the Kenya Cup this season, Nondies will rely on their recent form and determination to potentially upset the reigning champions and progress further in the tournament.
