Novak Djokovic, the 36-year-old Serbian tennis star, continued his remarkable journey at the US Open by securing a straight-set victory over Taylor Fritz.
With a score of 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 on Arthur Ashe Stadium, Djokovic earned his spot in a record 47th men’s Grand Slam semi-final, inching closer to potentially equaling the record of 24 Grand Slam titles.
Despite briefly grappling with the New York heat and humidity, Djokovic showcased his tenacity and skill on the court. This three-time US Open champion will now face American hopeful Ben Shelton in the semi-finals. Shelton, in contrast to Djokovic, will be making his first-ever appearance in a Grand Slam semi-final after defeating compatriot Frances Tiafoe.
Djokovic’s victory not only set a new record for most Grand Slam men’s semi-final appearances, surpassing Roger Federer but also placed him just two wins away from matching Australian Margaret Court’s tally of major singles victories.
Reflecting on his achievements, Djokovic expressed his gratitude for the sport and the support he has received throughout his career, particularly given his upbringing in war-torn Serbia.
He acknowledged the sacrifices made by his parents and the dedication of knowledgeable and passionate individuals who contributed to his success.
Regardless of his impressive performance, Taylor Fritz, a 25-year-old American, was unable to secure a win against Djokovic. The match took place in hot conditions, with the temperature reaching 32°C and high humidity, prompting the heat rule to be enforced and the stadium roof partially closed to provide shade.
Fritz displayed determination and even broke Djokovic’s serve at one point, but Djokovic’s efficiency and experience ultimately prevailed, securing his victory in two hours and 35 minutes.
Djokovic now stands poised for a potential showdown with top seed Carlos Alcaraz in the final, a rematch of their thrilling five-set Wimbledon final just two months ago. Alcaraz will face German Alexander Zverev in the quarter-finals.
Novak Djokovic’s remarkable journey continues as he aims for a historic 24th Grand Slam title and the opportunity to etch his name further into tennis history.
