The East Africa Secondary School games are set to witness an electrifying display of talent on August 18th, following the conclusion of the National Term Two games hosted in Kakamega.
Among the schools that promise thrilling performances is Nyamira Girls’ Hockey team, a school that has triumphantly revived its lost glory by defeating Tigoi Girls High School 1-0 in the national championship.
The National secondary school games became a battleground as Nyamira Girls’ hockey team sought to assert their dominance over their opponents. The team accomplished a significant feat by ending Sinyolo Girls’ ten-year reign as five-time East Africa School Games champions in Nyanza.
Not content with just that, Nyamira Girls then went on to defeat Tigoi Girls High School 1-0, a match etched into the memories of many, marking the end of their 32-year wait for a national championship victory.
The journey to the championship was anything but ordinary for Nyamira Girls, who last clinched victory back in 1991. Guided by the expertise of three tacticians – Head coach Dennis Kigae, Coach Naomi Kabibi, and Coach Eliakim Obondo, the school’s geography teacher – the team achieved a historical moment.
Coach Obondo highlighted the importance of sports in nurturing the girls’ mental well-being and enhancing their academic performance. He emphasized, “Encouraging students to participate in sports not only helps them stay physically fit but also promotes mental well-being, reduces stress, and enhances their overall academic performance.”
Head coach Dennis Kigae expressed his optimism, stating that the team is better prepared than ever before. After finishing fourth in the regional games in Tanzania in 2019 and third last year, Nyamira Girls’ hockey team is eager to showcase an improved performance this year.
The regional games are scheduled to kick off on August 18th, just after the conclusion of the National Term Two games.
This remarkable journey of the Nyamira Girls’ hockey team serves as a testament to their dedication, hard work, and unyielding spirit, inspiring future generations of young athletes to pursue their dreams in the world of sports.
