Odongo’s Brace Inspires Kenya To World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series Crown
Patrick Odongo’s brace secured a 12-5 victory for Kenya against Chile, clinching the Dubai leg of the World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series trophy on Sunday evening.
The Daystar University Falcons speedster propelled Shujaa into an early lead with the first try of the game, converted by co-captain Tony Omondi, making it 7-0. However, a minute before halftime, Chile responded with an unconverted try by Benjamin Videla, narrowing the gap after sustained pressure in Kenya’s 22.
Shujaa returned with determination in the second half to protect their lead. Patrick Odongo sealed the win at the last moment by capitalizing on a Samuel Asati kick to score the decisive try.
With the Dubai victory secured, Shujaa now looks forward to the next leg of the Challenger Series in Montevideo, Uruguay, scheduled for March 8-10.
On the women’s front, the Lionesses aim to rebound in Uruguay after a 19-5 loss to China in the Dubai final.
Falling behind early with quickfire tries from Yan Meiling and Dou Xinrong, both converted by Chen Keyi and Gu Yaoyao, the Lionesses fought back with a try from Sharon Auma in the sixth minute. However, China responded immediately through Keyi.
Despite the loss, the Lionesses had defeated China 17-12 in their Pool B encounter on Friday at the same venue. The focus now shifts to the upcoming tournament in Uruguay as the Lionesses aim to lift the trophy.
