Okutoyi Eyes W80 Tennis Tournament in Texas

Kenya’s leading tennis player, Angela Okutoyi, is poised to compete in the W80 tennis tournament in Texas, USA this week, with her sights set on climbing the rankings.

Currently benefiting from a scholarship at Auburn University in the USA, Okutoyi currently holds the 869th position on the WTA singles standings.

Despite her rank, the youngest Kenya Open champion is confident that her form is on an upward trajectory as she heads to the event in Texas.

Okutoyi expressed her optimism, stating, “My singles form is improving, and I believe I can have a successful run in Texas, potentially reaching the semifinals or even the final.” Her time in the US college tennis circuit over the past year has contributed significantly to her development as a player.

She acknowledges her progress in various aspects of the game, noting, “Over the past year, my tennis skills have seen substantial growth. My off-court mobility, agility, and service have all greatly improved since I joined the university, thanks to the guidance of coaches and support staff.”

The ITF Women’s World Tennis Tour features tournaments at different prize money levels, ranging from Sh2.25m to Sh15m. Okutoyi aspires for young tennis players in Kenya to have similar opportunities in the future, seeing her own journey as an enlightening example.

She expressed her hope by saying, “It’s an eye-opener, and I pray that Kenyan players will have the chance to compete at this level in the future.”
