Athing Mu, the reigning women’s Olympic 800 meters champion, will not compete in the upcoming Paris Games.

The 22-year-old track star, who captured hearts with her performance at the 2021 Tokyo Games, suffered a fall during the US trials in Eugene, Oregon, which dashed her hopes of defending her title.

The incident occurred at Hayward Field, where Mu fell approximately 200 meters into the final. Despite being a key part of the USA’s 4x400m relay victory in Tokyo, Mu was unable to recover from her fall, finishing the race in tears, a poignant reminder of the relentless competitiveness of the US Olympic track and field trials.

The trials are notorious for their strict qualification criteria, where only the top three athletes in each event secure a spot on the Olympic team, regardless of their seasonal performances.

Mu, who clinched the world champion title in 2022, had been absent from the season’s races due to an injury. She appeared to be making a strong comeback in the preliminary rounds of the 800m, positioning herself as a favorite for the Olympic team.

However, her fall has now paved the way for Nia Akins, Allie Wilson, and Juliette Whittaker to represent the US in the 800m event at Paris, with Akins leading the trio with a winning time of 1:57.36.

Other noteworthy performances at the trials included Quincy Hall’s victory in the men’s 400m with a time of 44.17 seconds, narrowly defeating Michael Norman and Chris Bailey. Meanwhile, 16-year-old Quincy Wilson, despite a commendable sixth-place finish, missed out on an automatic Olympic spot but remains a contender for the 4x400m relay team.

Grant Holloway, the reigning world champion in the 110m hurdles, also made headlines with a world-leading time of 12.92 seconds in his heat, signaling his readiness to chase Olympic glory in Paris.
