Rafael Nadal expressed confidence in his upcoming tennis comeback, emphasizing his eagerness to be competitive after nearly a year away from professional play due to a hip injury.
The 22-time Grand Slam champion underwent surgery twice in 2023 and plans to return at the Brisbane International, a lead-up event to the Australian Open, scheduled from January 1-7.
In a social media video, Nadal acknowledged uncertainties about his playing level but stated, “I’m just happy to be back and with great excitement to make the effort that is necessary to have fun, and I believe that I will be competitive.”
Nadal last competed at the Australian Open in January, exiting in the second round. Originally targeting a return for the clay-court season, he faced setbacks and ended his campaign early.
The 37-year-old, now ranked 664th globally, expressed readiness for his return despite doubts and challenging moments throughout the year.
Reflecting on his journey, Nadal said, “I have finally had good training weeks at a level that allows me to have the possibility to compete again… I don’t aspire to anything else but to be competitive.” The two-time Australian Open champion aims to make a strong return to the sport after being sidelined and to compete at a familiar tournament where he has found success in the past.
