Atletico Madrid secured an impressive 3-0 victory over last season’s surprise package Girona in La Liga on Sunday, marking their first win of the campaign.

Goals from Antoine Griezmann, Marcos Llorente, and Koke ensured a dominant performance at the Metropolitano stadium.

Julian Alvarez made the starting lineup for Diego Simeone’s side, while new signing Conor Gallagher debuted as a substitute after joining from Chelsea.

Atletico controlled the game from the outset, with Michel Sanchez’s Girona, who finished third last season ahead of fourth-place Atletico, struggling to make any significant impact.

Griezmann broke the deadlock just before halftime with a low-driven free-kick that caught Girona’s goalkeeper, Paulo Gazzaniga, off guard. Llorente doubled the lead early in the second half with a spectacular strike from outside the box, leaving Gazzaniga with no chance as the ball rocketed into the top corner.

Girona, weakened by the loss of several key players over the summer, failed to challenge Atletico and remain winless with just one point from their first two matches. Koke sealed the victory in stoppage time, finishing off a counter-attack set up by Llorente, capping off a strong display by the Rojiblancos.
