Ryan Crouser of the USA surpassed his own shot put world record in a stunning display of athleticism at the USATF Los Angeles Grand Prix, the sixth World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meeting of the season, held on Saturday, the 27th 2023.
The sunny yet blustery afternoon at UCLA’s Drake Stadium witnessed Crouser unleash a mighty throw, reaching an astonishing distance of 23.56m.
This remarkable achievement surpassed his previous world record of 23.37m, set at the US Olympic Trials in Eugene back in June 2021.
Crouser’s record-breaking throw occurred on his fourth attempt, solidifying his status as both the world and Olympic champion. Despite the monumental accomplishment, Crouser humbly acknowledged that he still has untapped potential within him.
He expressed his excitement, explaining, “I’m really excited because it didn’t feel polished. It felt like I had a ton of power and I caught a big one.”
The renowned shot putter has been diligently refining a new technique, involving a larger step across the ring instead of a more stationary stance.
He revealed that he successfully implemented this step in rounds two through six, and the technique “clicked” for him. Crouser enthusiastically shared, “I finally saw that spread I’ve been looking for. That’s what has me the most excited.”
Before his record-breaking throw, Crouser had already been sending impressive shots into the field. His first attempt of 23.23m now ranks as the joint fifth-longest throw in history, while his second attempt of 23.31m stands as the third-longest throw in history.
In addition to these exceptional marks, his series included distances of 22.94m, 22.86m, and 22.80m, highlighting his consistent dominance throughout the competition.
Securing the second spot was Olympic bronze medalist Tom Walsh from New Zealand, whose best throw reached an impressive distance of 22.12m. Payton Otterdahl of the USA claimed third place with a personal best throw of 21.99m, showcasing the high level of competition at the event.
Ryan Crouser’s awe-inspiring feat not only solidifies his position as one of the greatest shot-put athletes of all time but also pushes the boundaries of human capability in the field.
With his new world record, Crouser has etched his name into the annals of sports history, leaving fans and fellow athletes astounded by his unparalleled strength and technique.
