Mohamed Salah is set to depart from the Egypt squad at the Africa Cup of Nations to continue treatment for a hamstring injury at Liverpool, according to the country’s football association on Sunday.
Salah is expected to attend Monday’s game against Cape Verde before traveling to the UK. The Egyptian Football Association stated that after discussions between the Egyptian and Liverpool medical staff, it has been agreed that Salah will return to the UK for further treatment, with hopes of rejoining the Egypt team for the semi-finals.
In a press conference on Sunday, Salah expressed his unwavering belief that he will eventually be crowned the champion of Africa, saying, “I have won everything possible but this one not yet. It will happen somehow, that is what I believe, and whatever I believe I achieve, so sooner or later it will happen.”
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp confirmed the plan, stating that Salah’s rehab would likely take place with Liverpool or their medical team. Salah had already been ruled out of Egypt’s crucial Group B clash against Cape Verde and their last-16 match if they advance.
Klopp left the possibility open for Salah’s return to the tournament if he regains fitness before a potential final. Egypt needs a win against Cape Verde to secure a spot in the last 16.
Salah’s injury is the latest setback for him at the AFCON, where he aims to win his first continental title with Egypt.
