As the national rugby sevens side, Shujaa, gears up for the Challenger series starting on Friday, January 12, Co-captain Tony Omondi exudes confidence in the team’s capabilities.
Omondi conveys that the players are eager to hit the field with their eyes set on a top-four finish by the end of the series, aiming to secure a spot in the playoffs.
Reflecting on the team’s aspirations, Omondi states, “We all know we fell short of playing in the SVNS series this year, and the goal is to get back into the series. With the current crop of players, I believe that is possible. Preparations have gone well. We know that to have a shot at getting back on the Series, we have to finish in the top four, and that is the motive.”
Shujaa faced relegation from the World Rugby Sevens series last year, marking the commencement of their journey back to the main league. The Kevin Wambua coached side, currently in Dubai, is diligently preparing for the weekend showdown at the iconic Sevens stadium.
Starting their campaign in Pool C, Shujaa will contend with neighbors Uganda, Mexico, and Germany. Their first pool match against Mexico is scheduled for 13:14 EAT, followed by a clash with Uganda at 17:58 EAT.
They will conclude their group stage matches on Saturday with a faceoff against Germany at 12:59 EAT. The team remains focused on achieving a successful start to their Challenger series campaign.
