The national rugby 7s team concluded their Paris Olympics campaign with a hard-fought 10-5 victory over Samoa in the ninth-place playoff final on Saturday evening.
Shujaa had a score to settle with the islanders, who had handed them a crushing 26-0 defeat in their final Pool B match on Thursday.
John Okoth provided the perfect start for Kenya, crossing the try line to give them a 5-0 lead within the first three minutes.
Okoth further delighted the Kenyan fans with his second try at the start of the second half. Unfortunately, co-captain Tony Omondi was unable to convert the try.
The Samoans, fueled by determination, sought a comeback and their relentless pressure on Kenya’s 22-meter line paid off in the 10th minute with a try from Motu Opetai.
Despite Samoa’s best efforts to equalize, Shujaa’s defense held strong, securing a valuable win and sweet revenge for Thursday’s defeat.
