Wafalme Stars’ middle blocker, Simion Kipkorir, has been honoured as the LG/SJAK Sports Personality of the Month for May after becoming the first Kenyan player to win the Confederation of African Volleyball (CAVB) men’s club championship.
The 25-year-old athlete, who plays for MS Boussalem (MSB), played a crucial role in guiding his Tunisian side to victory in a thrilling five-set match against favourites Zamalek.
Kipkorir’s outstanding performance earned him the title of the continent’s best blocker, marking another milestone for Kenyan representation in the men’s competition. He was also named in the championship’s dream team.
Expressing delight in the continuation of the award that recognizes excellence in all sporting disciplines, LG’s EA Marketing Director Changh-Yun Kim emphasized the positive impact of Kenyan athletes in putting the country on the world map. The award signifies LG’s commitment to supporting the development of sports talent in Kenya.
Kipkorir, fondly known as ‘Kosirai,’ joined MSB on a one-year deal last September, following his stint as an opposite hitter with Saudi Arabia’s Al Ibtisam.
The remarkable comeback victory against Zamalek marked MSB’s debut in the continental competition and shattered Zamalek’s hopes of securing a treble this season, having previously won the Egyptian league and cup competitions.
Prior to his success with MSB, Kosirai captained the General Service Unit (GSU) team since 2019, winning five consecutive national titles. He began his volleyball journey at Malava Boys High and Cheptil Boys, where he secured two national school titles in 2014 and 2016.
Kosirai faced tough competition for the May award, including fellow volleyball player Trizah Atuka, who was recognized as the best middle blocker in the women’s category of the African club games.
Additionally, Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga, who scored five goals in May to secure the Qatar Star League (QSL) title for Al Duhail, was a strong contender.
During the award ceremony in Nairobi, SJAK President James Waindi urged all athletes to strive for excellence, assuring them that their efforts are appreciated.
He expressed gratitude to LG for their continued partnership in recognizing exceptional sports performances.
Other notable nominees for the May award included Commonwealth Games champion Mary Moraa, Emmanuel Wanyonyi, Ferdinand Omanyala, Faith Kipyegon, Hellen Obiri, Delilah Akinyi of Kenya Prisons netball team, Grace Adhiambo of Kenya Lionesses, and footballers Esse Akida and Humphrey Mieno.
Simion Kipkorir’s achievement not only highlights his personal success but also shines a spotlight on Kenya’s growing presence and accomplishments in the world of volleyball.
