Jannik Sinner refuted suggestions of being the best player in the world at present, highlighting the uniqueness of each player’s journey and accomplishments.
The Italian world number two, poised to close in on the top-ranked Novak Djokovic should he secure victory in Madrid, maintains humility despite his impressive record this season.
“I think it’s a complex question to address. Comparing myself to Novak and Carlos is not straightforward, considering their remarkable achievements,” remarked the 22-year-old Sinner during a press conference in Madrid.
Acknowledging the achievements of his counterparts, Sinner emphasized his focus on personal growth and game strategy rather than direct comparison. “I have immense respect for both of them. My aim is to stay true to my style of play and optimize my potential,” he added.
With his previous struggles at the Caja Magica in mind, Sinner is determined to make a breakthrough this time around, especially as the top seed in Djokovic’s absence. Reflecting on his past performances, he expressed anticipation for the tournament’s outcome.
In contrast, Carlos Alcaraz, the Spanish world number three, hailed Sinner as the current best player in the world. The two-time defending champion in Madrid recognized the challenge of competing against his friend and rival for the top ranking.
“He’s a formidable opponent, capable of excelling on any surface. It’s a tough competition between us, Novak, and myself for the top spot, but I’m committed to giving my best,” remarked the 20-year-old Alcaraz.
Despite facing a recent right arm injury, Alcaraz is optimistic about his readiness for the tournament, aiming to overcome any physical hindrances in his quest for victory.
Elsewhere, world number four Daniil Medvedev expressed a desire to control his emotions better on the court, particularly in response to officiating disputes. Reflecting on past outbursts, Medvedev acknowledged the need to maintain focus amidst potential challenges during the clay season.
As Madrid gears up for intense competition, players like Medvedev strive to channel their energy positively, aiming for success while overcoming personal challenges on the court.
