South African golfer Cara Gorlei emerged as the frontrunner at the Magical Kenya Ladies Open following an outstanding performance in the second round on Friday.
Gorlei, who began the day tied with England’s Eleanor Givens at four under par, took command with a remarkable five under par 72 at the par 73 Baobab Course Vipingo Ridge.
Gorlei’s flawless display included three consecutive birdies and three more on the 10th, 11th, and 13th holes, giving her a one-stroke lead heading into the third round. Nataliya Guseva also delivered an impressive performance, finishing the day at four under par to secure the second position.
Meanwhile, Ayako Uehara trailed by two shots, tied with Chiara Tamburlini, Shannon Tan, and Alessandra Tanali. Despite their efforts, all Kenyan competitors missed the cut at six over par, with only 64 players advancing to the third round.
As the tournament progresses, the competition for the €300,000 prize pool is expected to intensify. The Magical Kenya Ladies Open, part of the Ladies European Tour 2024 calendar, serves as a platform for talented female golfers worldwide to showcase their skills and compete against each other.
Absa Bank Kenya has shown its support for the event by investing Sh15 million as the official banking partner. Notably, among the five Kenyan amateur golfers who competed were Naomi Wafula, Mercy Nyanchama, Channelle Wangari, Jacqueline Walter, and Kellie Gachaga.
