Maurice Obilo, the head coach of Zetech Sparks, remains steadfast in his assessment of his team’s performance, emphasizing the need for improvement despite their unbeaten record in the national women’s basketball premier league.
The Sparks, who finished as first runners-up last season, have won all nine of their games so far, putting them level at the top of the standings with defending champions Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), both teams accumulating 18 points.
“We didn’t hit our peak performance levels, but we showed resilience in the second half, regaining our composure and executing our game plan effectively. However, we are not entirely satisfied with our performance thus far. Our focus remains on approaching each game with determination and striving for improvement,” remarked Obilo.
Acknowledging the challenges posed by having a team predominantly composed of students, Obilo highlighted the difficulties in arranging training sessions due to academic commitments.
“Managing training sessions can be tricky due to our players being students. Last week, for instance, we only managed one session due to exams and an anti-doping agency visit for testing, leaving us with limited preparation time. Such interruptions can impact our performance,” Obilo lamented.
Despite already playing one game in the second leg against JKUAT LYNX, Zetech Sparks still have three matches remaining in the first leg. They are yet to face KPA, USIU Flames, and Strathmore Swords.
In the women’s premier league, defending champions KPA and Zetech Sparks lead the standings with 18 points each, maintaining their unbeaten records after nine matches. Meanwhile, Equity Hawks and newcomers USIU Flames occupy the third and fourth positions respectively, also boasting 18 points after playing ten matches, winning eight and losing two.
In the men’s premier league, City Thunder holds the top spot after securing victories in all their first-leg matches, accumulating 22 points.
Defending champions Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) closely trail with 20 points, despite suffering two losses in the first leg. Ulinzi Warriors complete the top three with 19 points, despite losing three matches in the first leg.
